Abstract: In this article, we explore the relationship between responsibility and punishment according to the German philosophé Friedrich Hegel.By this, we attempt to shed light on punishment in relation to responsibility, in which the latter becomes a justification for punishment. In light of this, we grant punishment a form of legitimacy. Therefore, we cannot legally punish someone neither for acts he or she was not responsible for, or acts beyond his or her awareness and will.We will also examine the connection between responsibility and intentionality, taking into consideration that the human action is always driven by a set of intentions. Thus, intentionality is regarded as a fundamental characteristic of an act, in a sense that it reveals all the reasons behind any human action. There fore, we can say that if the law punishes for those criminal acts that are contrary to the law, then these acts must also meet essential conditions. The first condition stems from responsibility; whereas, the second one is related to intentionality, referring to the intentions that motivated the doer -perpetrator while committing the act.
