Abstract: In this text, we look at the novels Becos da memória (2020), by Brazilian Conceição Evaristo, and Do Not Go Gentle (2016), by South African Futhi Ntshingila, which explore a notable relationship between characters and the spaces they occupy. The approach highlights the study of the ideas of suspension and scarcity, which are dear to the novels, and finds support in humanistic geography, especially in the distinction that this theory offers for the terms space and place (TUAN, 2005; 2013), to apply such notions to the study of excerpts of said works of fiction. Our analysis highlights that the favela’s space-place is a determining and defining element in the lives and (im)possibilities of those who live in it, being directly related to the scarcity, urgency, and suspension in the reactive way of living of the characters.
