Study of IMF and its North-South Component (BZ) When DST Reaches -130nT≤ DST ≤-100nT During Geomagnetic Storm
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The interplanetary magnetic field, its east-west component (BY), and its north-south component (BZ) fluctuate within solar activity and play a key role in the interaction of the solar wind with Earth’s magnetosphere. In this manuscript, daily averaged data spanning the initial decade (from 1 January 2014 to 5 May 2024) were employed to establish the criteria -130nT≤ Dst ≤-100nT. A significant, moderate, and weak correlation between geomagnetic storms and the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), BY, and BZ has been identified. For instance, the IMF exhibits an anti-correlation coefficient of -0.7 in the years 2023 and 2015. Additionally, BY and BZ demonstrate a robust correlation coefficient of +0.7 in the year 2018.
