Abstract: Pressures on the land have never been as great as they are at the beginning of the 21st century. Among them is desertification, turning land into arid, unproductive zones. A reappraisal of the concept shows that if the term is both misappropriated and hard to pin down, it nonetheless remains key for structuring aid from the international community.
