Museums and Art Galleries: Differences and Hybrid Exhibitions
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Museums and art galleries are two cultural institutions that play essential roles in preserving, communicating and disseminating artistic and historical heritage. While museums emphasize conservation, education, and historical continuity, art galleries focus on aesthetic appreciation, creativity, and artistic critique. In the modern era, however, the boundaries between the two have become increasingly blurred, giving rise to “Hybrid Exhibitions” that integrate curatorial approaches from both institutions. A prominent case is the Leonardo da Vinci Exhibition, which combined paintings and sketches with prototypes of his inventions, enhanced by multimedia and virtual reality technologies. This article argues that museums and art galleries are not rigidly separate, but can converge into hybrid spaces that foster both cultural preservation and new aesthetic experiences in the 21st century.
