Impossible Politics Grounded Optics of Chinese Restaurant Life from Chinese Immigrant Hip-Hop Videos.
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: What is the significance of Chinese immigrants making hip- hopYouTube videos to tell stories of their working lives in the US? This articleexamines three non-commercialized hip-hop videos made by Chineseimmigrants to elucidate class, gender, and racial dynamics within the Chineserestaurant industry that are largely invisible to the public. These dynamicsreveal many contradictions and ambiguities that do not fit neatly innormative American politics, thus culminating into a condition ofimpossibility. This condition makes it difficult, if not impossible, to conceivehow Chinese immigrants can move forward in broader struggles for socio-economic justice.
