Road Traffic Accident Blackspot Site Mapping Using Gis and Remote Sensing in Hawassa City, Snnpr, Ethiopia

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Road crashes kill about 1.3 million people worldwide every year and continue to affect the lives of people adversely. This study investigates the road traffic accident blackspot mainly using spatial analyst tool. Identification of accident site was done by using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology. Spatial analysis like Getis OrdGi* (Gi*) and Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) was conducted to ascertain the black spots.RTA in relation with vehicles technical problem were vehicles break and wheel failure encompasses only 16.3% but the major causes might be negligence and ethical problems of drivers because 73.21% of accident were caused by normal vehicles and almost all the fatalities, injuries and property damages are caused on good asphalt roads. Temporal analysis shows the hourly, daily and monthly variations in the road traffic accidents of Hawassa city from 2016 - 2018. Most of these accidents occurred during the day time between 6:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Locations that had hotspots occurred in 2016 was westernmost, in 2017 were center and the upper southeast, and in 2018 was northernmost. And coldspots were north to the south in 2016, west and south in 2017, west and southeast of Hawassa city in 2018. Results indicate that hotspots locations for traffic accident crashes show different spatial and temporal patterns starting from the center of the city to periphery. The major causes of road traffic accidents in Hawassa city were failure to give priority for pedestrians on their crossing roads and driving with the speed beyond expected. Investigating on those distinct patterns of black spotlocations thoroughly can lead to better road accident safety focused transportation plans and policies and thereby reducing traffic related crashes in Hawassa city.
