Sleep Disorders and Paranormal Experiences: Exploring the Mystery of Sleep Paralysis
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Sleep paralysis (SP) is a sleep disorder characterized by temporary inability to move or speak while falling asleep or waking, often accompanied by vivid hallucinations and a sense of an unseen presence. Across cultures, these experiences have been interpreted as paranormal encounters, involving spirits, demons, witches, or other supernatural entities. This paper explores the phenomenon of sleep paralysis by integrating scientific, psychological, and cultural perspectives. Neurophysiological research shows that SP occurs during the REM stage of sleep when the brain wakes before the body, leaving muscles temporarily paralyzed and the mind vulnerable to dream-like hallucinations. Personal observations highlight the emotional and psychological impact of SP, while cross-cultural analysis demonstrates how folklore, religious beliefs, and spiritual narratives shape interpretations of the experience. Understanding SP through both scientific and cultural lenses can reduce fear, promote awareness, and provide insight into the complex interaction between brain function, psychology, and human perception.
