Consciousness Beyond Matter: A Subtle Substrate Hypothesis
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Consciousness is presently studied almost entirely through the gross body (sthūla), especially the brain. This paper argues that such an approach is incomplete. If awareness were not already present at the subtle level (sūkṣma), it could not appear in the gross. The gross body is inert without subtle consciousness to animate it. This study proposes that awareness is carried by the subtle substrate — including the bioplasmic or etheric sheath — which also retains smṛti (memory) and continuity. Practical use cases are discussed in medicine, mental health, AI, learning, and end-of-life care. The work is preliminary and exploratory, intended as a conceptual foundation for future empirical research.
