Biomarkers through time: from bench to big data (@EATRIS-CONNECT summerschool 2025)

Abstract: Opening lecture at the EATRIS-CONNECT summerschool 2025, held in Ljubljana, where 35 young professionals come together to learn about different aspects of digital transformation of translational medicine. The summerschool is being organised as part of the European Horizon project EATRIS-CONNECT. My lecture reviews the evolution of biomarkers, starting from laboratory tests to support pharmaceutical fdevelopment to digital biomarkers supporting prevention of disease. Data plays a crucial and central role in this development, and particularly in combination with accessible and responsible AI applications, has the potential to deliver its potential as 'the new gold' in personalized healthcare.
