Genetic Evaluation of Novel Mexican cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) for Yield and Fiber Traits

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The research was carried out at the experimental area of Cotton Research Institute, Agriculture Research Center, Tandojam during the kharif season of 2023. The experiment was laid-out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications and plot size 10’ x 10’. Total eight treatments of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) TH-F7-01/23, TH-F7-02/23, TH-F7-03/23, TH-F7-04/23, TH-F7-05/23, TH-F7-06/23, TH-F7-07/23, koonj (check) and the parameters were observed plant height (cm), sympodial branches plant-1, monopodial branches plant-1, no. of bolls plant-1, boll weight (g), seed cotton yield plant-1, GOT% , staple length (mm), seed index (g), micronaire (μg). Genotype were highly significant for height of plant (PH) , bolls plant-1 (BP), seed cotton yield (SCY) and GOT% whereas significant for sympodia, monopodia plant-1 boll weight, staple length and micronaire value. Variety koonj produced higher seed cotton yield with higher GOT% among candidated lines TH-F7-06/23 produced heavier bolls with seed cotton yield and higher seed index. Line TH-06-F7 produced taller plant with higher sympodia while TH-F7-07/23 produced higher bolls with higher micronaire. Seed cotton yield displayed highly significant and positive associates with GOT% while significant and positive with sympodia plant-1 and bolls plant weight. Rest of the traits showed non-significant association. Regression coefficient displayed that highest increase in seed cotton yield due to increase in sympodia plant-1 Whereas the highest variation in seed cotton yield is due to variation in GOT% followed by sympodia plant-1. At similarly index 50% three groups of the genotypes are formed.
