Quality of Accounting Information and Financial Performance of Listed Consumer Goods Firms
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the quality of accounting information and financial performance of listed consumer goods firms in Nigeria. Using secondary data from audited annual reports of 19 firms over 2014–2023, panel regression analysis was conducted. The fixed effects results show that timeliness (β = 1.0085, p < 0.05), comparability (β = 67.0792, p < 0.05), and relevance (β = 760.9541, p < 0.05) significantly improve earnings per share (EPS), while reliability (β = 17.5909, p < 0.10) has a marginal positive effect. The model explains 29.72% of the variation in EPS and is statistically significant (F = 3.2106, p < 0.001). The study concludes that relevance has the strongest impact on performance, followed by comparability, reliability, and timeliness. It recommends improving reporting timeliness, ensuring consistent accounting practices, enhancing reliability through strong internal controls, and aligning disclosures with stakeholders’ decision needs.
