Navigating the Ethical Space: An Enterprise Framework for Responsible GenAI and LLM Development

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The pervasive integration of both Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) into enterprise operations presents a dual landscape of unprecedented opportunity, but also significant ethical hazard. Regarding the latter opportunity, while a global consensus on high-level AI ethics principles is emerging, the practical operationalization of these principle within the complex, domain-specific, and often highly regulated environment of an enterprise is lagging. This article proposes a novel, multi-dimensional "ethical space" framework specifically designed for deployment within an enterprise context. This space is defined by the sensitivity of the underlying Knowledge Base (KB), the nature of the user's Question (Q), and the User-provided Information (U). We posit that assessing the coordinates of a specific GenAI/LLM application or interaction within this enterprise-interpreted space allows for a systematic, context-aware identification of potential ethical risks. This assessment, guided by the enterprise's specific culture, risk appetite, and established standards, directly informs the definition and implementation of tailored development guidelines and technical and process controls. We argue that operationalizing this framework within an existing enterprise structure can mitigate inherent weaknesses related to subjectivity and complexity. Furthermore, we introduce and explore the concept of leveraging AI-assisted approaches to enhance the operationalization and continuous refinement of this framework, including AI-driven sensitivity assessment, automated risk mapping, dynamic control application, and continuous monitoring. We propose the development and voluntary adoption of sector-specific, regulated libraries of ethical controls and AI-assisted tools as a powerful mechanism to standardize responses to recurrent ethical risk profiles, foster collective responsibility, and ensure alignment with broader ethical principles like those espoused by IEEE Ethically Aligned Design (EAD). This integrated approach aims at providing enterprises with a practical pathway to foster responsible GenAI innovation. Adding dynamic and collaborative approach to this pathway may concur to build trustworthy systems aligned with both organizational values and societal well-being.
