Abstract: In the contemporary world, Environmental Education is necessary and urgent to respond to socio-climatic problems, the challenges and contradictions of economic development and survival on the planet. Even though it is a legally established topic in Brazil, school Environmental Education finds it difficult to effectively implement it in basic education schools. Critical Historical Pedagogy, influenced by historical-dialectical materialism, can contribute to the studies of environmental themes and the relationship between subject and nature. The critical approach, derived from this theory, has contributions to civic, collective and emancipatory formation, which are also important to geoeducation, arising from the most recent concern with the conservation of threatened geodiversity.
