Abstract: The research aims to comprehend the developments and trends in AI-aided English language teaching over the past decade.Based on 20 empirical studies, this research aims to fill the gap in the existing knowledge regarding the effectiveness and challenges of AI-aided English language instruction. The study uses the theory of activity with seven main constituents: tool, subject, object, rules, community, division of labor, and outcome. The framework is used to describe the changing contradictions and relationships between these constituents. In the process of choice and selection of relevant articles, the PRISMA method was applied to ensure a systematic and comprehensive review. The research suggests that AI technology can significantly enhance English language pedagogy, particularly in teaching writing, correcting assessment, and motivating learners. However, there remain certain challenges regarding the development of instruction around conversational skills and the role of the teacher in designing lessons. While AI-based resources can significantly aid in language teaching, much more needs to be done to ensure effective communication and reciprocal growth among the learners. This paper explores why we should examine more closely how artificial intelligence is revolutionizing language teaching. It sheds light on emerging trends and suggests directions which require more research. The need to bridge AI tools and pedagogical principles is emphasized, and the critical role teachers play in enhancing AI-supported language teaching is highlighted.
