Assessment of renal profile in psoriasis: A comparative study

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACT Context: Psoriasis, a chronic and recurrent inflammatory skin disease, is now considered a multi-organ rather than a condition affecting only the skin. The inflammatory process in psoriasis can affect the kidneys, along with other systems. At present, there is paucity of studies, and conflicting results in establishing the relationship between psoriasis and kidney involvement. The present study aims to assess the renal profile in psoriatic patients in comparison with age, sex-matched controls. Aims: To study the renal profile in psoriasis patients in comparison with age and sex matched controls. Setting and Design: This is a cross-sectional, comparative study conducted at a tertiary care hospital. Materials and Methods: Sixty subjects- (30 each of age and sex matched cases), controls were enrolled over two months. Along with a detailed history and physical examination were performed, and the PASI score was calculated in all the cases. Biochemical parameters. including serum creatinine, urea, and uric acid were assessed in all subjects. Statistical Analysis Used: Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS version 20. Results: The mean serum uric acid level was significantly higher ( P < 0.0002) in the cases when compared with controls. No significant differences were observed for serum creatinine and urea. No significant relationship was noted with gender, age, and PASI score. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated elevation in mean serum uric acid in cases compared to controls. No such finding was observed with urea or creatinine levels. As serum uric acid is a marker of renal function, further studies involving larger population are necessary to assess if alteration in uric acid levels can be used to predict renal involvement at an early phase.
