Synthesis and tunable properties of double-walled and single-walled zirconia nanotubes: Enhancing bioactivity for bone and dental implants with controlled local delivery of antimicrobial peptides
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This research investigated zirconia (ZrO2) nanotubes (NTs) synthesized through anodization in electrolytes with different glycerol concentrations. High-glycerol solution (sol 1) produced double-walled NTs, while low-glycerol solution (sol 2) formed single-walled NTs at 60V. Well-ordered NTs developed within 0.5-1h in both solutions, with sol 2 showing faster growth and higher initial surface area (166.00 m2/g at 1h). Crystallinity studies revealed mixed tetragonal and monoclinic phases, with sol 1 favoring tetragonal and sol 2 favoring monoclinic phases at extended anodization times. In simulated body fluid tests, both NTs demonstrated strong apatite-forming ability over 28 days, achieving Ca:P ratios of 1.86 (sol 1, 3h) and 1.94 (sol 2, 1-3h). NTs from sol 2 (1h anodization) were selected for drug delivery studies using melittin-PLGA system. Uncoated NTs released 50% melittin within 60 minutes, while PLGA coating extended the release duration. PLGA-coated NTs showed enhanced antibacterial activity against S. aureus. This study demonstrates ZrO2 NTs' potential in biomedical implants, offering controllable properties for improved bioactivity, drug delivery, and infection prevention.
