Rice Straw Rope Utilization Model as an Alternative Raw Material for the Sustainable Handicraft and Furniture Industry

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Rice straw, with its relatively high fiber content, holds potential as an alternative material for industrial use.The need for alternative materials has grown due to declining supply and increasing shortages of conventional resources. The use of rice straw as an alternative particularly in the craft and furniture industries can be achieved through twisting techniques to produce rope. This study aims to explore the potential of rice straw as an alternative material through a collaborative design approach involving designers, farmers, and craftsmen. The research employs a structured methodology encompassing analysis, prototyping, evaluation, communication, and implementation.Farmers are engaged in processing rice straw into semi-finished materials, while craftsmen transform these materials, specifically into rope, for use in various craft and furniture products. The resulting rope, characterized by its rigidity, rough texture, and light brown color, differs from alternatives such as jute and banana fiber ropes. The collaborative process has successfully produced a range of eco-friendly products, including doormats, flower vases, storage boxes, plant stands, chairs, tablets, and shelving units. This study highlights the potential of rice straw as an alternative material for creative product development, offering a sustainable solution to environmental and material scarcity challenges.
