Time Only, Not Space

Abstract: Relativistic observables directly interrogate clocks, not rulers. Building on this, we develop the time-only optics hypothesis within Quantum Loop Chrono Dynamics (QLCD): gravitational phenomena arise from a deformable clock field τ̃(x) while space acts as a non-participant rigid ruler. Light-path data constrain an integrated optical index rather than its partition into “space” versus “time,” and astrophysical lensing carries structural degeneracies (mass-sheet, source-position) that keep that partition underdetermined. The central theoretical result is the QLCD Pillar-4 doubling: enforcing proper-time action invariance and impedance invariance for gauge fields yields an effective index n = τ̃⁻², restoring the full first post-Newtonian coefficients for light bending and Shapiro delay without invoking curved 3-space. We outline targeted null tests—Solar-System timing, binary pulsars, cluster weak lensing, and strong-lens cosmography with dynamics—that isolate the clock map and compare it against light-path integrals. Existing measurements are consistent with the time-only framework. The decisive, falsifiable prediction is that the space contribution parameter εspace remains consistent with zero across independent regimes; a persistent εspace ≠ 0 would require modification or rejection of QLCD’s time-only hypothesis. This reframing preserves all tested predictions of general relativity while making explicit, chronometric commitments testable with current data.
