Russia Out, Israel In: The Double Standard of International Sport
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Following the 2022 invasion, Russia was swiftly banned from international sport for breaching the Olympic Truce, undermining Olympism’s values, annexing Ukrainian sports bodies and creating unfair conditions for Ukrainian athletes. Israel’s conduct of war in Gaza meets those same criteria, yet the IOC and FIFA have taken no action so far. The double standards of IOC and FIFA show that sport’s norms and principles bend to politics: while neutrality continues to be claimed, credibility is what’s really at stake.
