Relief to Risk: The Double-Edged Sword of Self-Medication

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACTThe global practice of self-medication presents a significant complexity within healthcare systems. It is critical to highlight the associated risks to communities, especially the dangers of irrational antimicrobial use without medical guidance. These dangers include a higher likelihood of inappropriate therapy, treatment delays, the development of antimicrobial resistance, and a rise in morbidity. Consequently, there is a pressing need for widespread awareness campaigns and the implementation of legislative measures to ensure safe and judicious practices. Enhanced understanding and information on the consequences of self-medication and, consequently, its rational use can limit emerging microbial resistance issues. The World Health Organisation characterises self-medication as the "selection and use of medicines by individuals to treat self-recognised or self-diagnosed conditions or symptoms”. This comprehensive analysis delves into both the significant advantages and substantial risks linked to self-medication practices.
