Leopold von Ranke and the Ideal of Objectivity in History

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines the historiographical contribution of Leopold von Ranke (1795–1886), widely considered the father of modern scientific history. Ranke emphasized the critical use of primary sources, the methodological rigor of archival research, and the ideal of objectivity summarized in his famous dictum “wie es eigentlich gewesen” (“to show what actually happened”). While his approach established history as a professional academic discipline, later historians such as E.H. Carr and Marc Bloch criticized the Rankean vision of pure objectivity as unattainable. This article explores both the methodological legacy of Ranke and the ongoing debates over objectivity in historical writing, highlighting his role as a foundational but contested figure in the historiography of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
