The stiffness of a roller between two flat surfaces: An experimental study using modal analysis
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The load-stiffness relationship of a roller sandwiched between two flat surfaces is investigated through physical experiments. The test components and conditions are representative of bearing rollers. This study provides a comprehensive dataset on roller stiffness in bearing applications. Measurements from hammer impact tests on various rollers are both accurate and precise. Comparing experimental results with predictions from the Tripp model, we find that roller stiffness under light loads is significantly lower than predicted. This discrepancy is mainly attributed to surface roughness, which the Tripp model does not account for. For practical applications, we propose simple formulas to predict real-world roller-rail stiffness with ±10% accuracy.
