Cross-linkage of Climate Change, Crime, Child Labour, and Sustainable Development in Borno State, Nigeria
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This research examines the interconnection between climate change, criminal activity, and child labour in Borno State, Nigeria, a region grappling with environmental decline and instability. A descriptive correlational design was employed to gather data from 400 participants in five local government areas using structured questionnaires and key informant interviews. The quantitative analysis demonstrated significant positive correlations among climate variability, increasing crime rates, and the rise in child labour. Multiple regression analysis indicated that climate change is a significant predictor of both crime and child labour. Qualitative findings highlighted the compounded impact of insurgency and school closures on worsening child exploitation. The results are examined through the lens of the Climate-Crime Nexus Theory and the Poverty Trap Framework, emphasising the complex nature of these societal issues. The study concludes with suggestions that focus on climate adaptation, improving access to education, enhancing security, and promoting economic empowerment to break the cycle of vulnerability and facilitate sustainable development in alignment with the relevant Sustainable Development Goals.
