Analyzing the Effectiveness of Mobile Device-Based Music Technology Education: Focusing on the Application of the OECD Learning Compass 2030 Model
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study analyzes the practical effectiveness of music technology education utilizing mobile devices, based on the OECD Learning Compass 2030 framework. While conventional music technology education has been constrained by its reliance on expensive equipment and specialized infrastructure, the widespread use of mobile devices offers a promising alternative to mitigate these limitations.Mobile-based digital audio workstations such as FL Studio Mobile provide user-friendly interfaces with advanced production features, enabling students to engage in music creation freely, regardless of physical resources. The study implemented a standard 15-week curriculum with two groups: music technology majors (N=20) and non-majors (N=20).Students were evaluated based on their technical proficiency and development in OECD core competencies, specifically creativity, responsibility, and conflict resolution. The results showed that majors achieved significantly higher outcomes in technical proficiency (p<.001), likely due to their prior exposure to production tools and structured training. However, non-majors also demonstrated innovative results by integrating their respective disciplinary expertise through cross-genre creative projects.Notably, in the competency-based assessments, nonmajors exhibited a wider range of variations. This suggests that the use of customized learning tasks and discipline-integrated strategies effectively fostered creativity, collaboration, and self-directed learning within this group. These findings highlight that mobile devices, when used beyond auxiliary functions, can provide equitable opportunities for music education and serve as effective platforms for fostering transformative competencies aligned with the OECD's vision for future-oriented learning.
