Cultural Differences and Their Psychological Implications for Foreign Language Learning: a Theoretical Contribution

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: : This theoretical study investigates the impact of cultural variables on the psychological dimensions of foreign language learning. It draws on key cultural theories and psychological frameworks to explore how learners’ cultural backgrounds influence motivation, anxiety, identity, and self-efficacy. The findings suggest that mismatches between learners’ cultural expectations and classroom practices can lead to emotional barriers that affect learning outcomes. The study calls for a reconceptualization of language learning as a culturally embedded psychological process. It concludes that cultural awareness is essential in SLA theory and practice to support learners’ emotional well-being and academic success. Keywords: Anxiety, Cultural variables– Motivation – Psychological dimensions – Second Language Acquisition
