From Vocation to Victimhood: Blaming Heaven for the Fall of Man

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This preprint challenges Second Temple expansions of Genesis 6 (notably 1 Enoch, Jubilees, and the Qumran scrolls) that shift human guilt onto angelic figures. Through the lens of sacred anthropology—vocation, boundary, and sacred time—it restores the canonical reading: the "watchers" were not fallen angels but human stewards who abandoned their charge. The essay demonstrates how Jude and 2 Peter engage apocryphal traditions critically rather than affirmatively, and it situates Qumran as a case study in distortion institutionalized. By reframing myth as fractured memory, the work re-centers responsibility in humanity and calls for alignment to covenantal stewardship.
