Study of Anomalous Rhythms Using Metric Modulation - Focusing on the Drum Rhythm with a 4-grouping Structure in 7/8 Beat-

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study analyzes a drumming technique that involves grouping rhythms in units of four sixteenth notes within a 7/8 time signature framework, from the perspective of metric modulation. The primary objective of this research is to explore how irregular rhythmic structures can be applied creatively and originally in performance, arrangement, and music production, moving beyond conventional rhythmic forms. The methodology involves a case analysis of drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, who is known for his innovative use of metric modulation in odd-meter contexts.Specifically, the study examines how Colaiuta utilizes repetitive groupings of four sixteenth notes to generate a sense of modulation, emphasizing the start of each grouping through accent placement. This technique creates a rhythmic illusion in which an alternative sense of pulse coexists with the primary meter, allowing for a polyrhythmic effect that challenges the listener's perception of time and structure. The findings suggest that such applications of metric modulation enable the performer or arranger to depart from predictable rhythmic patterns and instead construct complex, layered grooves. The repeated use of four-note groupings in a 7/8 time signature highlights the coexistence of two distinct rhythmic structures, resulting in a polymetric texture that can be perceived as irregular yet musically compelling. These techniques demonstrate the potential of metric modulation as a powerful tool for creative rhythmic expression in modern music.
