Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Psoriasis is a chronic and multifaceted skin condition that can present in various forms, such as plaque, flexural, guttate, pustular, or erythrodermic types. It is recognized as an autoimmune disease, with both genetic predispositions and environmental triggers contributing to its onset. While it can occur at any age, it most commonly begins in early adulthood, around the age of 20. The condition typically affects areas like the scalp, elbows, knees, shins, umbilicus, genital region, and sacral area. The size of psoriatic plaques can range from just a few millimetres to covering large areas of the body, with the disease's severity fluctuating over time sometimes persisting for months or even years. In extreme cases, psoriasis can be life-threatening and may require urgent hospitalization. Traditional topical treatments often have limitations in drug absorption and effectiveness. Advanced formulations like nanoemulsions, in situ gels, and film-forming systems offer improved drug delivery by enhancing skin penetration and retention. These innovative approaches aim to increase treatment efficiency, patient comfort, and therapeutic outcomes in psoriasis management.
