Self-Binding Beer-Waste Biomaterial via Soda Ash–Induced pH Modification

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article presents a novel process for producing a self-binding biomaterial derived from brewery byproducts, specifically spent grains. By combining chemical treatment with soda ash (sodium carbonate), thermal processing, and mechanical blending, the material achieves cohesive and paste-like properties without the addition of synthetic binders. Variations in the process — including drying, burning, bleaching, and extended fermentation — yield a range of textures, strengths, and resistances. The process offers scalable applications in sustainable architecture, design, and experimental biology, while contributing to global discussions on circular economies and vernacular material innovation. This publication is intended as open defensive prior art to prevent misappropriation and to ensure that the method remains freely available for educational and non-commercial research use.
