The Siamese State Tipiṭaka: Religious, Cultural and National Identity Roles

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines the publication of the Siamese State Tipiṭaka during the reigns of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and King Prajadhipok (Rama VII), highlighting its significance in religion, culture and national identity. The printing of the Tipiṭaka in Thai script under Rama V marked a historic transition from palm-leaf manuscripts to modern printing, serving not only as a religious milestone but also as a declaration of Thailand’s status as a civilized nation amidst Western colonial pressures. Under Rama VII, the project was further developed, producing a complete edition that was widely distributed to universities and libraries around the world. The study demonstrates that the Siamese State Tipiṭaka is more than a Buddhist scripture; it is a symbol of sovereignty, cultural pride and Thailand’s enduring presence on the global stage.
