The Bottled Water Paradox: Logical and Physical Challenges of Time Travel

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Time travel has long attracted debate in both physics and philosophy. The famous grandfather paradox highlights causal contradictions, but it remains largely a logical puzzle. This paper develops a layered argument: starting with an extended form of the grandfather paradox, then introducing the principle that any interaction with the past can disrupt reproduction by even one second, producing entirely different individuals, thus rendering all interactions forbidden unless the traveler was always part of history. Building on this foundation, we present a physical thought experiment—the Bottled Water Paradox. Unlike typical discussions where the traveler remains intact, here the traveler is a decomposable entity: a bottle of water from the year 2100 appearing in 2025. We analyze two scenarios: (i) the entire bottle is consumed, dispersing molecules into the environment; and (ii) an upgraded case where half the bottle is consumed and half deliberately sealed in a safe for 75 years, withheld from reassembly. For time travel to remain consistent, both portions must contribute to the identical bottle’s existence in 2100 so that it can return to 2025. This dual-sided requirement intensifies conflicts with quantum indeterminacy, thermodynamic irreversibility, conservation principles, and even human free will. We do not attempt a resolution; instead, we offer the Bottled Water Paradox as a test that any credible theory of time travel must confront.
