Research on research hotspots and trends of maker spaces in higher education institutions —— Visualization analysis based on CiteSpace
Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Objective: To investigate the development trends in maker space construction and research across universities, enhance the cultivation of innovative talents, and facilitate project implementation. Methodology: Based on 339 literature articles focusing on “educational maker spaces” or “campus maker spaces” from the Web of Science database, this study analyzes the current status and research hotspots of university maker spaces globally through author collaboration networks and keyword mapping. Conclusion: The development of university maker spaces worldwide has progressed through three phases—emergence, growth, and rapid expansion—with continuous field expansion and exponential growth in academic publications. However, recent research momentum has slowed following the establishment of industry-academia partnerships. Recommendations: University departments should strengthen collaborative planning, actively organize student participation in academic competitions and theoretical seminars, develop customized training programs for different majors, and establish dedicated maker spaces to support innovation and entrepreneurship practices.
