Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper analyses the semantic and structural dynamics of Twitter discussions following the unexpected speech lapse by King Baltasar during the 2019 Epiphany parade in Andoain, Basque Country. The study applies Social Network Analysis (SNA) methodologies using NodeXL to map out the semantic clusters and key actors involved in shaping the conversation. By collecting tweets between 6 and 14 January 2019, the research identifies 3,447 nodes and 3,645 relationships that form a discourse network characterised by political and racial tensions. The study finds that racialised narratives and political affiliations, particularly around EH Bildu and ERC figures like Gabriel Rufián, heavily influenced the discourse. Additionally, comparisons are drawn between this incident and other politically charged events, such as a shooting in Amurrio. Semantic network visualisations reveal distinct meaning clusters, central influencers, and emotional responses, ranging from xenophobic criticism to solidarity.
