TAIWAN BLOCKADE & INVASION: A GLOBAL ECONOMIC COLLAPSE The Case for an Enforced Freedom of Navigation Treaty (FONT)
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: A Chinese blockade or invasion of Taiwan would put over $10 trillion in annual global economic activity and key supply chains at immediate risk, demonstrating that traditional military alliances alone cannot counter the threat of modern economic warfare at critical maritime chokepoints. This paper proposes a multilateral Freedom of Navigation Treaty (FONT) uniting G7 and ASEAN states to ensure protected passage through strategic shipping lanes and automatic, coordinated economic responses to any interference. Grounded in UNCLOS and established legal precedents, Freedom of Navigation Treaty (FONT) prescribes joint naval escorts, sanctions, insurance pooling, and intelligence sharing to make blockades economically unsustainable and to maintain global stability through enforceable economic deterrence.
