The Union of Bessarabia with Romania in the Interwar Writers' Publications: a Sociocritical Approach
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The Union of Bessarabia with Romania in 1918 had a profound impact on the identity and national consciousness of Romanians, but also on the socio-political context of the time. The moral atmosphere in society led to the formation of a dominant social discourse, whose expressive marks were concretized in the publishing of the time. The publications of inter-war writers, as a document of the period, is a relevant example of how social and political events are reflected in language, influencing collective perceptions. The texts published in the newspapers of the time are not merely simple accounts of facts, but also ideological constructions serving certain social or political interests, forming an influential discourse. The study of these texts from a sociocritical perspective requires a deep understanding of how power structures, cultural and economic norms, and the relationships between different social groups are reflected and mediated through language. The method of sociocriticism makes it possible to identify patterns of behavior, ideologies or values that can be found in the publicistic text and that may become indicative of changes in public mentality or significant social processes. The analysis of the texts published in Bessarabia and Romania reveals the existence of several "social fields" (the Bucharest, Chișinău, Bălți, Iași, etc.), in which the discourses about the Union generally include the same ideology, vision, aspiration, ethical attitude, but at the same time they differ in particular aspects.
