Abstract: The Berbers (Imazighen) represent the indigenous ethnic continuum of North Africa, possessing a rich and deeply layered history that challenges simplistic narratives of the region. This article synthesizes recent high-impact genetic, linguistic, and historical research to explore the Berber identity. It details their deep-rooted prehistoric presence, evidenced by ancient DNA studies showing a unique genetic substrate with millennia of admixture from the Levant, Europe, and Sub-Saharan Africa. The article traces their historical interactions with major civilizations, from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, highlighting the establishment of influential kingdoms and empires.A central focus is the remarkable resilience of the Berber language (Tamazight), an Afro-Asiatic branch that has persisted despite centuries of external cultural pressures. The analysis covers the factors behind this linguistic continuity, including geographic isolation and strong oral traditions. Furthermore, the article examines the ancient Libyco-Berber script (Tifinagh), one of the world's oldest writing systems, and its modern revival and standardization.Finally, the article addresses the contemporary Berber revival movement, culminating in official language status in Morocco and Algeria.
