Surfacing the Lived Experiences of Children With Separated Parents: a Metaphorical Approach
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study explored the lived experiences of children with separated parents through a metaphorical lens. A descriptive qualitative design was employed, with eight children aged 8-10 years old from Jones, Isabela, Philippines, selected through purposive and snowball sampling. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and drawings, which served as visual metaphors for the children's experience. Content analysis, deconstruction, and interpretive analysis were used to decode the symbolic meanings embedded in drawings and verbal expressions. The findings revealed that the participants experienced personal emotional disturbances, insecurity, lack of confidence, and helplessness. Some children demonstrated a tendency toward introversion, verbal aggressiveness, immaturity, and egocentricity. Despite these challenges, many participants exhibited resilience, maintained a positive attitude, and excelled academically. The crucial role of extended family support in mitigating the negative impact of parental separation was highlighted. The metaphorical approach provided deep insights into children's complex emotions and coping mechanisms. This study underscores the importance of considering children's perspectives in understanding the effects of parental separation and emphasizes the need for tailored interventions that address their unique emotional and psychological needs. Recommendations include implementing metaphorical approaches in counseling, strengthening support systems involving extended families, and developing comprehensive support programs for affected families. While limited by its sample size and specific cultural context, this study contributes valuable insights into the nuanced experiences of children navigating parental separation, thereby informing more effective support strategies and interventions.
