A Case Study on the Efficacy of Ayurvedic Treatment in Ashmari

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Ashmari is one of the common diseases of the Mutravaha srotas (urinary system). Ayurveda mentions it as one of the Ashtamahagadas. Here, “Ashma” means stone and Ari means enemy. It is estimated that approximately 2-3% of the population experiences renal stone disease at some point in their lives. It is clinically characterized by colicky pain (renal colic) as it passes down along the ureter and manifests by hematuria, nausea, or vomiting. The disease is quite common and has a high rate of recurrence because of the westernized lifestyle choices, including changes in diet, increased salt intake, decreased water intake, excessive use of medicine, increased body mass index, etc. This case study presents a 54-year-old male patient experiencing pain in the abdomen, loin and groin on the left side, along with vomiting, nausea, burning sensation, and difficulty in micturition. Kidney stones were diagnosed clinically. Lithotripsy was advised, but the patient was unwilling to undergo the procedure. Hence, he opted for Ayurvedic treatment. The patient experienced significant relief in symptoms, and USG investigations showed positive results. The purpose of this case study is to discuss the safe and effective treatment of Ashmari with Ayurvedic medicine.
