Application of Advanced Molecular Diagnostic Techniques in Fish Health
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Molecular techniques have emerged as faster and more sensitive methods than traditional approaches, such as culture, serology, and histology, for identifying fish pathogens. Over the past 15 years, their use in the diagnosis of fish diseases has increased markedly. These advanced methods include polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction enzyme digestion, probe hybridization, in situ hybridization, and microarray technology. One of the key advantages of molecular techniques is their ability to detect pathogens in asymptomatic fishes. This early detection capability helps to prevent disease outbreaks before they become severe. Moreover, these techniques enable the precise identification of bacterial, viral, and parasitic organisms, as well as the assessment of host reactions and genetic variations linked to disease resistance. This deeper understanding also sheds light on the factors affecting fish health, such as genetic predispositions and environmental stresses. Accurate identification of pathogens through molecular diagnostics has the potential to reduce reliance on antibiotic treatment. This reduction is crucial to mitigate the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Overall, molecular techniques not only enhance the speed and sensitivity of pathogen detection in fish but also contribute to more informed decisions in disease management and sustainable aquaculture practices.
