Impact of GST on the Indian Economy
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on 1 July 2017 marked a transformative reform in India’s indirect taxation system, unifying multiple central and state-level levies under a single framework. Designed to establish the principle of “One Nation, One Tax, One Market,” GST aimed to simplify tax structures, eliminate cascading effects, and improve compliance. The reform has led to several positive outcomes, including higher formalization of businesses, improved revenue mobilization, enhanced interstate trade efficiency, and potential GDP growth of up to 1.5%. Sectors such as manufacturing, exports, and e-commerce have gained from reduced logistical barriers and standardized compliance norms. However, challenges persist in the form of complex rate slabs, compliance burdens on SMEs, state revenue shortfalls, and operational complexities in invoicing. Recent proposals to rationalize GST rates and strengthen the digital compliance ecosystem signal further progress. While short-term fiscal strains may arise, the long-term prospects of GST remain promising for strengthening economic growth, competitiveness, and fiscal transparency.
