The Blur: A Thermostatted Halo for Compiled Law
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: We formalize the Blur as a necessary, thermostatted uncertainty halo around compiled invariants. Zero–blur binaries shatter under finite precision and adversarial perturbation; adequate blur stabilizes execution while preserving Fisher–class invariants under translation (T ⊣C) and coarse–graining (R). We distinguish blur (isotropic, entropy–budgeted dithering around invariants) from filters (ideology–first projections that warp invariants), and prove three results: a stability lemma showing the existence of a minimal blur β⋆ for invariant retention; a Compiler Uncertainty Principle that lower–bounds the product of gluing residual and normalized code length by a gap–dependent constant; and a readability tradeoff that quantifies how blur hardens boundary inference (security) at the cost of false positives (usability). We give instruments for estimating β⋆, show how blur interacts with Murphy horizons and hazard exponents, and provide toy exemplars in code, measurement, and policy.
