The Impossibility of Defining the Universe in the Views of Fakhriddin Ar-razi
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article illuminates the views of Fahriddin ar-Razi on the concept of being. Razi emphasizes that the first of the two methods of definition - explaining the unknown through certain concepts - is not applicable to existence, and the second leads to a circular or gradual error. In his opinion, being is the first and most general concept that does not need a definition. This idea is reinforced by three premises: the fact that being is perceived as an initial concept without proof, that it cannot be described, and that it is the most general concept in the imagination. Also, Razi pays special attention to the difference between being and essence. He substantiates that they are not the same thing through four arguments and interprets the essence in a separate and ideal form from being. Thus, in the ontological question, Razi shows existence as the basis of all concepts.
