Systemic Constraints of Democracy and the Need for Meritocratic Reforms

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This essay examines the declining effectiveness of democratic systems in addressing complex challenges like climate change and fiscal sustainability. It identifies systemic flaws—information asymmetry, short-termism, and interest group capture—leading to suboptimal decisions. Proposing meritocratic reforms, it advocates a hybrid model where democratic value-based choices are paired with expert-driven instrumental decisions, ensuring legitimacy and improved governance.
