Zika Virus: A Tiny Mosquito, A Global Threat

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: A tiny mosquito bite can sometimes bring more than an itch. The Zika virus, a member of the Flaviviridae family, has caught global attention because of its unusual journey—from a quiet forest in Uganda to becoming a worldwide public health concern. Closely related to dengue and yellow fever viruses, Zika was once confined to a narrow equatorial belt, but since the early 2000s it has spread dramatically across the Pacific and the Americas, even reaching India.
