Stranger, Homecomer, Stayer: What Would Schutz Say on War
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: At the VII Conference of the International Alfred Schutz Circle for Phenomenology and Interpretive Social Science in Vienna (2026), I first publicly introduced two central concepts of my doctoral project: Total Disruption (a massive crisis which (i) affects multiple domains of life, and (ii) is experienced collectively by local communities, nations, or humanity as a whole) and The Stayer (the sociological and phenomenological figure denoting those who collectively live through a total disruption). I conceptualized total disruption as a limit situation (Grenzsituation) experienced collectively and, thus, a limit problem (Grenzproblem) for phenomenology. I also positioned the Stayer as a counterpart to the famous Schutzian figures of the Stranger and the Homecomer and explored it as a novel figure within the broad sociological tradition of the Stranger.
