During ancient times Nowgong District was included in the ancient Hindu Kingdom of Kamrupa as mentioned in the Mahabharata. This district was ruled by various kingdoms during ancient and medieval period till it passed into the hands of the British with the rest of the Assam in 1826. Passing into the hands of British, Nowgong was then administered with Kamrup and Darrang as the Lower Assam Division. In 1833 it was formed a separate district with its headquarter at Puranigudam after which it was finally removed to Nowgong in 1839. This became one of the favourite district of the East Bengal immigrants in Assam. Since 1901 there has been a spurt of the population in Nowgong due to the immigration from East Bengal districts for various reasons. On the eve of partition, Nowgong became easy settlement area for the East Pakistan refugees. This paper will attempt to examine and analyse the causes that led to the migration in Nowgong district during post-partition period.
