A Deep Neural Network Approach for Highly Efficient Lightning Prediction and Warning Systems
Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: The absence of accessible and accurate early warning systems for lightning strikes poses a critical challenge, leading to severe consequences such as loss of life. Addressing this issue requires an innovative, integrated solution. This study investigates the development of a highly accurate lightning prediction model using predictive artificial intelligence, specifically Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), and essential meteorological parameters. The methodology involves the selection of crucial parameters for the DNN model, with challenges including obtaining clean datasets and handling imbalanced datasets with rare lightning occurrences. The findings reveal a robust lightning prediction model achieving high accuracy, employing the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) to address imbalanced datasets, and utilizing efficient remote processing for real-time predictions. This research is vital for revolutionizing lightning hazard management through the integration of artificial intelligence and space agency data. Its significance lies in its potential to save lives, minimize damage, and serve as a model for global response. The implications extend to advancements in AI-driven lightning prediction, community-driven resilience efforts, and the practical integration of space agency data for societal benefit. Overall, this project contributes valuable insights and standardized solutions to the broader discourse on disaster preparedness and response.
