The Role of Curcumin in Cancer:
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Cancer is a life-threatening disease and one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Curcumin, a compound in turmeric, shows potential in cancer treatment but is hindered by low bioavailability and solubility. Curcumin is a polyphenol extracted from the rhizomes of the turmeric plant, Curcuma longa, which has anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. Curcumin, an orange crystalline powder derived from the herbs of Curcuma longa L. (Zingiberaceae), is a natural hydrophobic polyphenol obtained from the powdered rhizomes of Curcuma longa L. Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) is an herb. Several studies have demonstrated that curcumin exhibits a wide spectrum of biological and pharmacological properties, including antiproliferative, antioxidant, chemopreventive, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic activities.Chronic inflammation is associated with the development of cancer. Nanocurcumin shows promise as an innovative approach in cancer therapy, potentially offering improved efficacy and reduced side effects compared to traditional treatments. Early clinical trials indicate its potential to enhance the quality of life for cancer patients by mitigating treatment-related toxicities and improving therapeutic outcomes.
