Islam and Democracy: Compatibility, Contestation, and the Future of Participatory Governance in Muslim-Majority States
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This research Paper rigorously analyzes the relationship between Islam and democracy in Muslim-majority countries, emphasizing their compatibility, points of contention, and the potential for participatory government. This study employs a multidisciplinary approach, integrating political theory, comparative politics, and Islamic jurisprudence, to examine the alignment of Islamic principles with democratic norms and the problems encountered in their integration. Case studies from Indonesia, Turkey, and Egypt are used to illustrate the diverse experiences and outcomes of this relationship. The research suggests that although Islam and democracy have intrinsic compatibilities, the implementation of participatory governance depends on contextual interpretations, institutional structures, and socio-political dynamics.
